Wood Boring Beetles

Wood Boring Beetles can cause extensive damage to wood articles and structural timbers. These pests include:

  • Old House Borer - Usually found in newer homes, the larvae feed on seasoned softwoods, such as pine, spruce and fir. When the larvae mature, they emerge from the wood in spring or summer, leaving an oval hole 1/4” to 3/8” in diameter.
  • Powder Post Beetles - Usually less than 1/4” long, these small, brown insects attack hardwoods and leave numerous holes about 1/16” to 3/8” in diameter. Severe damage can result from the beetles continuing to breed in infested wood for generations.

Treatment procedures for wood-boring beetles depend upon the extent and accessibility of the infestation. If you suspect an infestation of either old house borers or powder post beetles, call 804-285-1191 for a free inspection and evaluation.
